BLOW-UP ON THE BORDER - VERDI, NEVADA 1994
Smoke eclipsed the sun shining on the California-Nevada border. Fire crews and local media watched flames approach their rock quarry staging-area in the hills above Interstate 80. When winds shifted and intensified, spotfires scattered downslope of the main fire. All observers quickly loaded into their vehicles and navigated the winding, smoke-shrouded roads toward town. Soon neighborhoods were pelted by embers as firefighters and homeowners sprayed water on rooftops and chased down the flames - no houses were lost. Winds gradually calmed as enigines, crews and bulldozers corralled the main fire within a few days.
