HOT SHOTS: PAGE 4
ON THE LINE: DIGGING IN
When its time to build fireline, no group of firefighters is as effective as hot shots. The supe keeps eyes on the main fire, the weather and adjoining forces. Foremen lead the crew in the right direction, looking for ways to maximize work. Squad bosses direct fireline construction and use their tools to lead by example. Sawyers shred brush and cut trees as their pullers scramble to clear the debris. Pulaskis swing like pistons of an engine to chop brush and roots down to dirt. Shovels and scraping tools free the line of any fuel left that may carry fire.
