HOT SHOTS: PAGE 6
HOURS BEFORE DAWN
Radio chatter quiets and a chill penetrates the woods. The crew huddles near hot spots along the fireline in groups of two's or three's, shuffling through their gear for food and coffee packets. Word is passed along to break until sunrise. They have just a few hours to stay warm and take turns napping in the dirt. Light shells and short tarps protect them from the dew that coats everything and briefly subdues the flames. Using their packs as pillows some sleep soundly, others are cold and restless.
