SMOKEJUMPERS: PAGE 189
2005 - WILD LAKE COMMUNITY THREATENED
Fire management policies were put to the test in late June when a large fire approached a dozen lakefront homes on Wild Lake, near Bettles . We were unable to jump near the cabins - smoke choked the skies and prevented us from seeing the ground. We jumped three miles away and ferried by boat from the lake's south to north end. Anxious homeowners briefed us en route. They were certain that some cabins were already lost, and their's would be next if we did not act fast. Our strategy: first protect the lives of residents and ouselves - then save their homes with what little gear we had. Land management boundaries designated 'emergency life protection only' for this remote and pituresque plot. Our jumpship could not carry eight smokejumpers and the tools we needed. Without reinforcements and supplies on the way, we knew we were undergunned from the start.
