2005 WILD LAKE FIRE STORMS PAST

Once on scene, we established our command post at the summer home of Richard Wien. Along with a floatplane and two boats, Wien had two small pumps, enough hose to surround his property, and a satellite phone. He also had a friend named Frank Murkowski, Alaska's Governor. Wien utilized his satellite phone, calling his friend to discuss fire management policies. When the smoke cleared, we were granted the use of two CL-215 water scooping airplanes parked in nearby Bettles. We ordered multiple large pumps, hose, and supplies needed to defend the cabins along the lake and adjacent creek corridor. In the end, one abandoned shed and a small gear cache was lost. We were heroes for a day and glad we could help. |
