SMOKEJUMPERS: PAGE 96
2002 CABIN PROTECTION
Due west of Fairbanks, the shores of Twin Lakes are dotted with fly-in cabins. A squad of Alaska jumpers are tasked with setting up water pumps and stringing hose to a dozen homes nestled in the woods. An unstaffed wildfire gobbles acreage on its path to the lakes as the crew scrambles to place sprinklers in strategic spots, soaking the cabins and ground litter. Giant pike hinder the operation, often getting snagged by passing boats. The cabins were successfully protected as the fire passed by.
