The Falls Fire north of Burns, Oregon, was human-caused and started July 10, 2024. By mid-August it burned more than 150,000 acres. I worked as a public information officer on the original Type 3 IMT that managed the firefighting effort, and one of the many Complex IMTs that followed. The Bench Lake Fire near Stanley, Idaho, was human-caused and started July 11, 2024, burning about 2,600 acres. I worked as a public information officer on the final IMT that assumed command of the fire.
